My research group focuses on clinical epidemiology and infectious disease complications using unique whole-population data from Sweden. Thanks to the Nordic personal identification number system, we can link data from various national registers and follow individuals over time.
By developing and using the CRITICAL MICROBES database, we collect and harmonize detailed registry data from across Sweden, enabling us to map how infectious diseases affect public health, work capacity, and societal costs.
Research Stories
Our landmark study published in The Lancet revealed that COVID-19 significantly increases the risk of acute myocardial infarction and ischaemic stroke. By analyzing all COVID-19 cases in Sweden, we demonstrated an 8-fold increased risk of heart attack in the first week following diagnosis.
